Cameron House – Older People – Dementia

Built in 1987, Cameron House is a purpose-built Residential Service designed to cater for the needs of 30 residents who have Dementia. It is only two miles from the centre of Inverness and situated in a very desirable residential area.

Accommodation

There are 26 single and 2 double bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities. Residents are encouraged to bring in their own furniture. The home has been built around a small courtyard garden which allows residents to circulate freely and safely. The rooms are spread over two floors and there is a lift to gain access the first floor.

There are ample communal areas including lounges, dining room and various quiet areas. The outside garden areas are extensive and feature a summerhouse and greenhouse. The grounds are completely enclosed with fencing and secure gate. This allows residents to walk around the grounds in comparative safety.

Aims & Objectives

  •  To provide a happy and caring environment, enabling residents to live as independently as possible
  • To provide residents with individually designed care plans to meet their needs, always mindful of resident’s rights and choices.
  • To positively encourage open and good relationships with relatives, advocates, professional agencies and other professionals in the wider community
  •  “In Christ’s name we seek to retain and regain the highest quality of life which each individual is capable of experiencing at any time.
  • Individual Care Plan

As previously stated residents have an individual care plan which aims to meet their specific needs. This plan is constructed by the client, family or advocate and the Key Worker. The Key Worker is the named member of staff who has overall responsibility for the resident’s care

The Care Plan is a working document, which is updated regularly.

    Family Involvement

Family members are encouraged to remain involved in the care of their loved ones in Cameron House. They do this by visiting on a regular basis and they may wish to accompany residents on social outings, GP / Hospital appointments etc. They may also wish to remain involved with aspects of personal care e.g. helping loved ones to bathe and dress.

Family members are valued by staff and they provide vital links to resident’s backgrounds and history.

Families are encouraged to participate in care planning and reviewing processes

    Community Involvement

Cameron House is fortunate in having the continued support of local community members and a Friends Group. They do this through regular visits and assisting with activities, outings etc.

    Residential Care

Clients are admitted to Cameron because of their needs. Clients will have been diagnosed as having Dementia and therefore it may not be possible for them to live independently in the community without 24 hour care. Once an application form has been completed and all the relevant information has been completed, (i.e. Medical and Social report), a 3 week assessment period is offered. If after the assessment period it is found that the client’s needs can be met at Cameron House, he/she would be offered a long term placement.

    Day Care

A place at our Day Centre can give a person with Dementia the chance to socialise and enjoy stimulating activities. It can also give the relative/carer some valuable time off. It is a small homely service catering for a maximum of 6 clients thus allowing the qualified/trained staff to provide a more individualised plan of care. Facilities are offered 7 days a week from one hour to eight hours daily. The Local Authority may meet the cost of this.

    Respite Care

One room at Cameron House is set aside especially for the provision of Respite Care.  It can be used for short or long periods and the Local Authority can meet the cost of this service. It can provide the person with Dementia a chance to socialise and enjoy all the activities, which Cameron House offers to residents. At the same time it gives the relative / carer a much-needed break.

    Facilities

    Other Services include -

The services of the Hairdresser are available two days a week in a well-equipped hairdressing room within the Home.

The Chiropodist visits every 3 months, but individual visits may be requested at other times as required.

The Physiotherapist will visit when requested.

The local Church of Scotland Guilds are responsible for staffing a small ‘shop’ which operates once a week within Cameron House. Residents may make purchases of sweets, toiletries etc thereby enabling them to retain some independence.

    Management & Staff

The Unit Manager has responsibility for the day to day running of the Home and is assisted by a Deputy Manager. There are 3 Senior Care Workers who each head up a team of 5 care workers, one of whom has been trained to act up to a senior role if and when required.

A separate team of care staff undertake the care of residents at night and there is also a bank of relief care staff. The home also has an administrator and a Gardener. All staff have one-to-one supervision with their Supervisors and this positive management structure enables staff to develop and become more confident and motivated. An annual appraisal system is being introduced soon.

SVQ assessments are ongoing in the home and staff are also encouraged to attend applicable training courses – through CrossReach or outside agencies.

    Admission Procedure

CrossReach is committed to the principle of equal opportunities.

Given the philosophy underpinning the work of CrossReach it is essential that staff are comfortable with delivery of services in Christ’s Name and able to speak through their personal commitment to Christ.

CrossReach do not require prospective residents or clients to belong to the Christian faith nor indeed to any faith, and aims to ensure that applicants are treated equally.

    Costs

If clients do not have sufficient income/capital to meet costs, the Local Authority may supplement these. A financial assessment is carried out to determine amounts involved for each individual.

    Referrals Procedure

Referrals may come from Clients, their families, Health Professionals or the Local Authority.

    Additional Information

Residents have a daily programme of activities to choose from which may include: Reminiscence groups; Daily worship services; Crafts; Baking; Gaelic group; Discussion groups; Watching videos

    Relatives Support Group

Cameron House has a Relatives Support Group that meets monthly. This is where relatives can meet to share their experiences, issues and feelings together with senior staff, in a relaxed comfortable atmosphere.
