Both our readings this morning touch, in some way, on the vexed question of the relationship of Christianity to Judaism. In the Gospel reading, Jesus- who was, of course, himself a Jew- has a conversation with a Gentile woman who raises the question of whether his mission is only to his fellow-Jews. About twenty years later, Paul- who was also a Jew- writes to the Christian church at Rome. Paul ponders a problem- a problem which did not seem very likely when Christianity first got under way- which both gladdens and saddens him.
